Running Time: 8 hours
Check one off your Cody bucket list! Join Exclusive Tours at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West as we once again team up with hiking guide Dave Leo, owner of Hiking Buddy LLC, for Trailing the Buffalo: Buffalo Bill and Cedar Mountain, a one-of-a-kind history hike to one of Cody’s most recognizable, and rarely visited, landmarks: the Buffalo Statue high atop Cedar Mountain.
Rising dramatically above town, Cedar Mountain has been part of Cody’s story for generations. On this special guided adventure, hikers will follow the trail up Cedar Mountain, taking in the scenery and spectacular views overlooking the community William F. ‘Buffalo Bill’ Cody helped create.
Along the way, discover stories of Buffalo Bill, the early days of Cody, and the history hidden within the landscape itself. As the trail climbs higher, the views get bigger, eventually opening across Cody, the Bighorn Basin, and the surrounding mountains.
The ultimate reward awaits at the top: the Buffalo Statue overlooking Cody. Stand beside this iconic landmark, hear the story behind its place on Cedar Mountain, and take in a view of Buffalo Bill’s town that few visitors—and even many locals—ever experience.
Part history hike, part outdoor exploration, and 100% Cody, Wyoming, this is your chance to experience the West from a whole new perspective.
This 9-mile round-trip hike is considered strenuous, with approximately 2,500 feet of total elevation gain and not recommended for beginner hikers. Along the way, we’ll take several planned breaks to catch our breath, enjoy the breathtaking views, and hear stories from our guides about the history of Cedar Mountain, Buffalo Bill, the Buffalo Statue and the development of Cody, Wyoming.
This Exclusive Tours: Trailing the Buffalo event begins at the Center of the West at 9:00 AM on Sunday, September 27th. We expect to return to the Center around 5:00 PM. Let’s explore history together and discover YOUR West!
